【서울】 유엔군사령부가 지난 21일 비무장지대(DMZ)에서 발생한 지뢰 폭발 사고와 관련해 군사분계선(MDL) 이남에서 북한의 대인지뢰를 확인했으며, 정전협정 위반이 발생한 것으로 판단했다고 밝혔다.

유엔사는 30일 공식 발표를 통해 “대한민국 군과 협조해 9월 21일 DMZ 지뢰 폭발 사고에 대한 합동 현장조사를 실시했다”며 이같이 밝혔다.

합동조사 과정에서 군사분계선 남쪽 대한민국 측 지역에서 작동 가능한 북한 대인지뢰 1발이 발견됐다. 유엔사는 조사 결과를 토대로 정전협정 위반이 발생했다고 판단했으며, “정전협정 체계에 따라 위반 행위에 대응하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

그러나 유엔사는 구체적인 대응 내용은 공개하지 않았다. 이번 발표는 지난 21일 DMZ에서 발생한 지뢰 폭발 사고의 원인을 둘러싼 유엔사의 공식 조사 결과로, 북한의 정전협정 위반 판단을 유엔사가 했다는 의미가 있다. 다음은 유엔사 발표문의 영문 원문. 

“United Nations Command, in coordination with the Republic of Korea military, conducted joint on-site investigations into the Sept. 21 landmine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone. During the investigation, the team identified an active Democratic People’s Republic of Korea anti-personnel mine on the ROK side of the Military Demarcation Line. Based on the findings of the investigation, UNC determined that an Armistice Agreement violation occurred. UNC is addressing the violation through established Armistice mechanisms. UNC remains committed to maintaining and enforcing the Armistice Agreement and fulfilling its responsibilities to preserve stability and prevent escalation on the Korean Peninsula.”
